Celebrating Research Excellence: Kelly Chambers Presents at AARE Conference

We’re incredibly proud of Kelly Chambers, our Kairos Deception Bay Head of Campus, for her outstanding contribution to educational research! Last week, Kelly presented her PhD research at the Australian Association for Research in Education (AARE) Conference in Newcastle, sharing insights from her paper “Educational Opportunities and Student Achievement in Queensland Alternative Schools.”

Her work shines a light on the critical role Special Assistance Schools (SAS) like Kairos play in re-engaging disenfranchised youth, while also addressing a significant social justice issue: ensuring these students have equitable access to curriculum and pathways that lead to senior school qualifications.

Key highlights from Kelly’s research:

  • SAS is the fastest-growing school sector in Queensland, yet many campuses offer limited access to the full Australian Curriculum.
  • Heavy reliance on vocational certificates often outweighs Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) attainment.
  • One school achieved 0% QCE completion, while another consistently achieved 100%, proving success is possible with the right support.
  • Limited curriculum offerings may restrict pathways to higher education, perpetuating social disadvantage.

Kelly’s findings spark important conversations about how we can better support marginalised young people to achieve their full potential. Her dedication to creating inclusive educational opportunities is inspiring and aligns perfectly with our mission to make a real difference in students’ lives.

Congratulations, Kelly! We are proud to have such passionate educators leading the way at Kairos.
