From Classroom to Creek

Earlier this week, Year 10 students from Kairos’ Nambour campus participated in an immersive field study to assess the water quality and ecological health of Petrie Creek.

Guided by Nicholas Petrie from ECOllaboration, our students transitioned from theoretical classroom concepts to practical, real-world application. The group conducted site assessments at Woombye and Quota Park, gaining a deeper understanding of the delicate balance required to maintain our local waterways.

Research consistently demonstrates that experiential learning significantly enhances student engagement and long-term retention. By moving science into the field, students see the direct correlation between environmental data and the health of their own community. Fieldwork fosters analytical thinking, precise data collection, and collaborative problem-solving; whilst this engaging hands-on participation empowers young people to see themselves as active contributors to environmental solutions.

Beyond the curriculum, excursions like this expose young people to professional pathways they may not have previously considered. Engaging with industry experts like Nick introduced Kairos students to diverse careers in Environmental Science and Engineering, Catchment Management and Conservation, Sustainable Urban Planning and Ecological Consultancy.

A sincere thank you to ECOllaboration for partnering with us to provide this high-impact learning experience. We are proud to support our students as they discover their potential as the next generation of environmental stewards.
